BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syria has accepted a U.N.-sponsored peace plan, international envoy Kofi Annan said on Tuesday, as troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad raided rebel forces who have taken refuge across the border in Lebanon. Assad made a rare foray into the heartland of Syria's year-old uprising, visiting a rebel stronghold in the city of Homs that his forces had overrun after weeks of shelling and gunfire, apparently to make the point that he can now tour the streets of the once bitterly fought-over district.
‘Turkey will do everything possible for Annan’s Syrian mission to fail’
UN envoy Kofi Annan is now on his way to Beijing with Russia’s support for his six-point peace plan for Syria. But online editor Camille Otrakji says the plan faces major hurdles both within Syria and outside of it. During his three-day visit to Moscow, Annan discussed his plan with President Dmitry Medvedev and Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov. Medvedev and Lavrov backed Annan’s roadmap for peace, which calls on both sides to announce a ceasefire and to conduct inclusive political talks. Camille Otrakji, an editor for the Syria Comment online magazine, believes it is difficult to foresee the outcome of Annan’s mission.

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake was reported in Japan on Tuesday. The tremors were strong enough to shake some of the buildings in Tokyo.The quake hit at a depth of 33 kilometers off the coast of Honshu Island. March 26, 2012 – GUATEMALA - Guatemalan volcanoes Santiaguito and Fuego increased their activity in the last hours and the authorities recommended on Monday took all the necessary precautions with the surrounding air traffic. The dispersion of ash in various directions and changes in wind pattern led to the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh) to warn about the civil aviation.
