Report: Syrian forces shell Homs, breaking UN-brokered truce

Syrian forces shelled two central districts in the battered city of Homs throughout the night and into Saturday morning, a resident activist and a human rights group said, the first bombings since a ceasefire took hold on Thursday."There was shelling last night in the old part of the city, in Jouret al-Shiyah and al-Qaradis. And I have heard eight shells fall in the past hour," Karm Abu Rabea, a resident activist who lives in an adjacent neighborhood, said on Saturday morning.


Russian warships heading for Syria: Russian military source

“A decision has been made to deploy Russian warships near the Syrian shores on a permanent basis,” the state-run RIA news agency quoted the source as saying on Friday. The source added that the Russian destroyer Smetlivy, which is patrolling waters off Syria now, will be replaced by another warship from Black Sea Fleet in May.


Obama approves non-lethal aid to Syrian rebels

A US official, whose name was not mentioned in the news reports, said on Friday that Washington is “providing non-lethal material assistance to the non-violent, political opposition.” The official added that the move was “consistent with… efforts to support” the Syrian opposition. “It is likely deliveries of this assistance will increase over time.”


Syria bolsters anti-ship missile capabilities to ward off an attack


April 13, 2012 – DAMASCUS – Syria has bolstered its missile capabilities in response to repeated threats of a U.S. military to launch a pre-emptive strike against that country. This includes the delivery of Yakhont supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles from Russia, according to RT TV news reports. The Yakhont supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles have been supplied as part of Bastion mobile coastal missile systems, the source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Interfax.

Yemen army clashes with Islamists, at least 34 killed

 ADEN (Reuters) - At least 34 people, mostly Islamist militants, were killed near the southern Yemeni city of Lawdar on Friday in clashes between government forces and an al-Qaeda-linked group, official and tribal sources said.Yemen's military launched an offensive five days ago against Islamic insurgents who attacked a military camp outside Lawdar.It intensified operations on Friday, sending an elite anti-terrorism unit from the capital Sanaa to join the fight, according to local officials.


 At least 222 people killed in five days of fighting in Yemen between al-Qaeda and army

At least 222 people including 183 militants have been killed in five days of clashes around the strategic south Yemen town of Loder which al-Qaeda is trying to seize, a security official said on Saturday.
Thirty-seven people were killed on Friday, the official told AFP, among them a child of 12 killed by a shell burst inside the town. During the day, five tribal auxiliaries were also reported killed along with 31 militants.

April 13, 2012 – IRAN – The Islamic Republic Army of Iran and the Revolutionary Guards are to conduct joint military exercises in the southwest or southeast of the country, a senior Iranian army commander said on Wednesday. Brig.-Gen. Ahmad-Reza Pourdastan, commander of the Iranian ground forces, said that the army and the Revolutionary Guards will carry out a special joint air exercise that will be the first of its type since the Islamic Revolution, Iran’s ISNA news outlet and hardline Mashregh news reported.

Expert warns of another quake in the Andaman region

April 13, 2012 – NICOBAR ISL – A fierce earthquake from the Nicobar Islands could strike over Songkran, sending a tsunami crashing into the Andaman Coast, an expert warned yesterday after finding that the 8.6 magnitude Sumatran tremor three days ago was exceptionally deep. “Whenever there is a quake rooted in the [Earth's] mantle, a following quake will be likely in the next few days,” said Professor Thanawat Jaruphongsakul, a senior seismologist at Chulalongkorn University.

Unusual spring storm dumps up to four feet of hail in Texas Panhandle

April 12, 2012 – TEXAS – An unusual spring storm in the Texas Panhandle Wednesday afternoon dumped two to four feet of hail near Dumas. Trucks were reported sliding off the road on Highway 287 as a result of the unexpected weather phenomenon. Snow plows were being used to clear the roads. Some vehicles were trapped in the drifts of hailstones. Chief Meteorologist Pete Delkus said a tornado watch was in effect for the Panhandle region through 10 p.m.



Thousands of Homes Flooded across Russia


Spring floods have submerged 2,477 homes in Russia, up from 903 in the past 24 hours, the Emergencies Ministry said on Thursday. A total of 5,223 residents have been affected. Over 1,000 people, including 150 children had to be evacuated, the ministry said.The situation is the worst in the Republic of Tatarstan, and Saratov and Samara regions, as well as in parts of the Central and Volga Federal Districts

Police gear to stop 'flytilla' activists at BG Int'l 

Some 650 police officers, mostly in plain clothes, are expected to meet pro-Palestinian activists who will arrive in Israel as part of the protest fly-in scheduled for Sunday. Israel believes some 500-1,000 activists will try to enter Israel en route to the Palestinian Authority. Police sources said that most plain-clothed officers will not be armed.

At least 25 killed as fighting against Qaeda enters its third day in southern Yemen

A Patriot missile battery was deployed near Haifa on Friday as Israel prepared to usher in the Passover holiday.Patriot missiles are designed to intercept medium range missiles. The last time a Patriot missile batter was deployed near Haifa was during the 2006 Lebanon War.
