Defying ban, Egyptian Christians visit Jerusalem

JERUSALEM (AP) — After the death of their spiritual leader, more than 2,000 Egyptian Copts have poured into the Holy Land for the Easter holidays, defying a ban he imposed on visiting Jerusalem and other Israeli-controlled areas. The influx — after decades when Egyptian pilgrims were a rarity — adds a new element to the already diverse mix of languages and faiths in Jerusalem's Old City during the holy season.

Obama, Sarkozy vow to step up efforts to end Syria violence

U.S. President Barack Obama and French President Nicolas Sarkozy called on Syria to abide fully with a UN-backed plan to stop a "brutal crackdown" and vowed to intensify efforts to end the violence, including steps at the UN Security Council.In a statement issued after a conference call between the two men, the leaders also urged Iran to undertake serious negotiations when major powers begin talks with the Islamic Republic in Istanbul on Friday. 



BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian troops clashed with rebels near the border with Turkey on Friday in what appears to be the first serious violation of an internationally brokered cease-fire that went into effect a day earlier, activists said.Despite the clash, there was still no sign of the widespread shelling, rocket attacks and mortars that were daily occurrences before the cease-fire went into effect at dawn on Thursday.

Iran official: Only faint chance of war breaking in the Middle East

 There's only a faint chance of war breaking in the Middle East, a top Iranian official was quoted by the country's state-run TV station as saying on Thursday, blaming any regional instability on the presence of Western forces.The comment by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ramin Mehmanparast came after, on Monday, the U.S. Navy indicated it deployed a second aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf amid rising tensions with Iran over its nuclear program. 


The head of Iran’s National Security Council Saeed Jalili suggested enigmatically Wednesday, April 11, that its representatives would present “new initiatives” at the negotiations with six world powers starting in Istanbul next Saturday. “We hope,” he said, “that the powers will also enter talks with constructive approaches; the language of threat and pressure against the Iranian nation has never yielded results.”

6.9 quake in Gulf of California - another strong tremor to shake Earth in 24 hours

 A 6.9 magnitude earthquake has jolted Mexico’s California peninsula. The tremor’s epicenter was 10.3 kilometers below the surface, and 133 kilometers from the town of Guerrero Negro. ­No data about the quake’s consequences is available at the moment.The shock follows a less powerful 6.4 tremor that shook the mountains of western Mexico on Wednesday. It made tall buildings sway in Mexico City, 322 kilometers away, sending people rushing out of buildings on to the streets.

Unusual spring storm dumps up to four feet of hail in Texas Panhandle

April 12, 2012TEXASAn unusual spring storm in the Texas Panhandle Wednesday afternoon dumped two to four feet of hail near Dumas. Trucks were reported sliding off the road on Highway 287 as a result of the unexpected weather phenomenon. Snow plows were being used to clear the roads. Some vehicles were trapped in the drifts of hailstones. Chief Meteorologist Pete Delkus said a tornado watch was in effect for the Panhandle region through 10 p.m.



Thousands of Homes Flooded across Russia


Spring floods have submerged 2,477 homes in Russia, up from 903 in the past 24 hours, the Emergencies Ministry said on Thursday. A total of 5,223 residents have been affected. Over 1,000 people, including 150 children had to be evacuated, the ministry said.The situation is the worst in the Republic of Tatarstan, and Saratov and Samara regions, as well as in parts of the Central and Volga Federal Districts
