Syria forces shell rebel-stronghold of Homs, activists say

Syrian troops on Sunday shelled the dissident province of Homs for the second consecutive day, reported opposition activists.Mortar shells have been fired on the districts of al-Khalidiya and al-Bayada in Homs since early Sunday, said the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian troops resumed their shelling of residential neighborhoods dominated by rebels in the central city of Homs Sunday, activists said, after the U.N. Security Council voted to dispatch the first group of monitors to the country to shore up a shaky truce. The reported shelling is threatening the cease-fire to which President Bashar Assad and rebels fighting to topple him had agreed. Both sides accuse each other of violating the truce at the center of international envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan

But prefers “cheapest” method possible – exposes Annan “peace deal” as insidious gambit to “buy time.”
As if there was any doubt, NATO’s official “Alliance News Blog” has confirmed that the US is committed to the overthrow of Syria’s government and is “already committed to helping [President Bashar al-Assad] fall,” but is “merely looking for the least violent, lowest cost way to get there.” The April 9, 2012 blog entry features an op-ed titled, “US ‘already committed to helping Assad fall’,” and fully admits that the US is equipping the so-called “Free Syrian Army” which has received weapons,

Iran calls for global nuclear disarmament

Jalili, Iran's top negotiator in the talks with the P5+1, reiterated on Saturday that Iranian views and positions with respect to the nuclear issue “bring about the opportunity for nuclear cooperation in the two key areas of disarmament and non-proliferation.”Referring to Tehran’s capabilities in using peaceful nuclear energy based on indigenous capacities, the Iranian negotiator said today, Iran can serve as a successful precedent in the promotion of the motto “nuclear energy for all, nuclear weapon for none” for all other countries.

Iran demands U.S., Europe hold off attack as long as nuclear talks continue, sources say

The round of nuclear talks between the six major world powers and Iran ended on Saturday in Istanbul without a significant breakthrough but with an agreement to reconvene next month. Sources close to the talks told Haaretz that the Iranians are demanding an American and European commitment not to carry out a military attack on their country as long as the talks continue.Western and Turkish diplomats said Saturday's meeting, which involved the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council...

The only real action at the resumed nuclear negotiations between Iran and the six world powers in Istanbul Saturday, April 14, was played out on the sidelines. The Obama administration’s intense effort to put relations with Tehran on a new, more amicable footing, was thrown back in its face by the head of the Iranian delegation, Saeed Jalili, who gave the senior US delegate, Under Secretary for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman, a humiliating runaround after she was reported in Tehran as having invited him to a bilateral meeting during the lunch break.

What do we really know about the Iranian nuclear threat? Iran says it wants the right to have its peaceful nuclear program formally recognized. But from the outside, Iran has long given the impression it has something to hide. And fear that Iran may soon have the capability to build a nuclear weapon, has spurred talk of a need to take action, even suggestions of a pre-emptive strike against Iran by Israel or the United States. But is that fear based on fact?

Soros says European Union unlikely to survive

Far from abating, the euro crisis has recently taken a turn for the worse,” he wrote in the article published on The Financial Times. “The European Central Bank relieved an incipient credit crunch through its longer-term refinancing operations. The resulting rally in financial markets hid an underlying deterioration; but that is unlikely to last much longer,” Soros added.
