IDF to set up first short-range rocket battalion, say army sources


The Israel Defense Forces is setting up a battalion for launching rockets into populated areas. The battalion, part of the Artillery Corps, will carry out missions that so far only the Israel Air Force could execute, IDF sources told Haaretz.Two weeks ago the ground forces approved in principle an Artillery Corps plan for setting up the IDF's first short-range rocket battalion next year.          


IDF officials: Missile attack on Israel would produce less than 300 casualties


Israel Defense Forces officials told cabinet ministers on Monday that should Israel undergo a coordinated missile attack, there would be less than 300 Israeli casualties. The number was mentioned by IDF officials during a discussion in Israel's security-diplomatic cabinet, Channel 10 reported on Monday, and is far lower than the number mentioned previously by Defense Minister Ehud Barak, who reportedly said that a maximum of 500 Israelis would die in such an attack

Iran, Others Propping Up Hamas

Hamas on Monday approved a Gaza budget for 2012 which is up 25 percent from last year, indicating donors including Iran are still heavily funding the terror group.
The chief of Hamas' budget committee Jamal Nassar told al-Arabiya the budget will be $769 million, compared to $630 million in 2011.

US Officials: Assad is Winning

The Chairman of the House intelligence committee said Sunday that there are no signs that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is losing his grip on power. “We don’t see Assad’s inner circle crumbling,” Mike Rogers told CNN. The Syrian leadership believes “it is winning” against rebels trying to topple the government, Roger's added, citing classified US intelligence reports.



'Syria vows to withdraw all military troops from towns by April 10'


The Syrian government has informed international mediator Kofi Annan that it is implementing a plan to withdraw all military units from towns by April 10, Annan's spokesman Ahmad Fawzi said on Monday. If Annan, who is the joint special envoy of the United Nations and Arab League, is able to verify the withdrawal on April 10, then both the government and opposition forces have 48  hours to cease hostilities, he said.

Russia, Iran set to counter US/Israeli strike against Iran. US-led naval drill

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov issued a strong warning against a military attack on Iran Monday, April 2,, saying that a pre-emptive strike would violate international law. His comments, made during a visit to Armenia, stopped short of threatening (the US and/or Israel) of consequences. But they backed up and were in tune with the explicit threat from Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei last Thursday of strong Iranian resistance to foreign intervention in Syria and vow to defend Damascus as the “center of resistance against Israel.”

No date, place yet for Iran nuclear talks: Russia


 Russia said Monday that the date and place for talks with Iran on its controversial nuclear programme have not been set, despite a US announcement over the first such meeting in more than a year.
"The date and the place of the meeting have not been definitively set," Sergei Ryabkov, deputy foreign minister, told the Interfax news agency."The meeting could take place on April 13 or 14 or in the following days,
